SIGRIST/SIEGRIST GENEALOGY
My paternal great
grandmother was born A. ELIZABETH SIGRIST on 11 Sept 1842 in Eglisau,
Switzerland. The A. presumedly stood for ANNA. She was baptised on 2 Oct 1842 in
Rafz, Switzerland. There is a record of her birth being 11 Nov 1842 but this
record is incorrect. Her parents apparently had to marry and did so on 21
Feb 1842 in Eglisau. By 1856, her father,
DAVID SIGRIST had traveled to America settling in Dubuque, Iowa. There
he was a "saddler", "harness maker", and several other
occupations involving leather. I do not know if he remarried but I think he
probably did. Anna and David divorced officially in 1858.
Anna's mother, ANNA LANG SIGRIST, remarried a KONRAD
VONTOBEL in Dielsdorf in 1860. What became of her is unknown right now. What is
known is that with David SIGRIST, she gave birth to GOTTFRIED DAVID SIGRIST (22
Oct 1843), ANNA SIGRIST (8 May 1849), and CAROLINA SIGRIST (27 May 1853).
The most fascinating part of my great
grandmother's "story" is that she changed her name to AMELIA LIZETTE
SIEGRIST. Either that, or the original name for the "A" in her
birth record stood for Amelia all the time. She came to America in 1858 and I
believe lived with her father on what is now Central Avenue in Dubuque. They
spelled their surname with the "E" by then. I am certain Amelia
learned her sewing "art" from her father and along with her husband,
JOHN MARTIN LILLIG, is considered a pioneer of Dubuque.
Amelia comes from a very long, and highly
distinguished line of the family SIGRIST from Rafz, Switzerland. Many of her progenitors
were judges and men appointed by the Dukes to serve the country. In the
histories
section (under construction), I will write more about the origin of the surname and other
interesting things about the family SIGRIST.
The first pages of the SIGRIST genealogy come from information sent to me by my
cousin Rudolf SIGRIST in Switzerland. Other pages
are from information researched by Joe E. W. There are a few discrepancies
as you will see but all in all, the information remains true to my heritage.
