3. John Henry (Clifford) or RISTON/ WRISTON
b. 25 Nov 1790 and
died after 24 July
1860 in Cache Co., Utah., and was buried before 25 Dec 1860.
(Changed surname to
CLIFFORD in 1855. He said this was his father’s
correct surname.) In 1817, John
RISTON
bought 200 acres of land on the Pond River. In 1819, he bought another 250
on
the
west fork of the river. He also owned many other parcels of land including
2 tracts in
the town called Fork of the Little River that is now known as North Fork.
Pond River is
a
small stream that runs through the city of Hopkinsville. These tracts were
not bought
until 1835. In 1839, he was no longer listed on tax records of Christian
Co. He moved the
family to Madison Co., IL to be near friends and relatives who were already
there. He
went to Nauvoo, IL first and then moved to Council Bluffs, IA. He arrived
there on 10
July 1846. John and Elizabeth were "endowed" to the Mormon
church on 29 Oct
1855.

Deborah on 29 Nov 1851. In Feb 1855, both John Price and Tillman had
their wives "sealed" to them under the Clifford name. On Oct 29,
1855,
John Price, Franklin G., and Leander had their parents and wives "sealed'
to them. All the family members were baptized under the WRISTON
name but on 5 June, 1885, Tillman was baptized. Census records show
them with the WRISTON surname, but in 1860 they used the CLIFFORD
surname.

Franklin
Co.) ID.
was married at the Endowment House in Salt Lake City that Brigham Young
advised him to never use the name Riston again, as his real name was
Clifford. In the battalion, he was John P. CLIFFORD but the monument to
the Mormon Battalion lists him as John WRISTON. He is buried in Gentile
Valley (Mound Fort), ID. He joined the battalion in Council Bluffs,
IA. He
and his brother, Isaac, went to Mexico on 20 July 1846. They marched until
Jan 1847. John then went to Pueblo, CO., then back to Utah. He grew
potatoes in Utah but he was a surveyor by trade and practiced this in Utah
and ID. John was baptized on 16 Feb 1845 in IL by James Olive. He
was in
Nauvoo in 1845 but left with most others in 1846. He "wintered"
in CO and
arrived in the "Valley" in Capt. Brown's detachment on 29 July,
1847. He
lived among Native American people and spoke Shoshone, Blackfoot and
Bannock acting as an interpreter. He then was the President of the Indian
Mission in the north in 1859. He located in Cache Valley in 1859 and moved
to Gentile Valley around 1880. He was known as a Clifford but took the
name, WRISTON though his real name was Clifford. John and Mary Lois
lived in Box Elder in 1853.

on 25 May 1852 in Loughboro, Addington Co. (now Frontenac), Ontario,
Canada. She was the daughter of Ransom VAN LEUVEN and Lucinda
HARVEY. Ransom was born on 25 Apr 1810 in Gananogue,
Ontario,
Canada. Lucinda was born on 12 Aug 1812 in Jefferson, Lorraine Co., NY.
(The name of the area in Canada is spelled LaBorough. I used the spelling
from the first source. Also, some sources have her death as 10 Dec 1919.)
Her grandfather was John VAN LEUVEN who married a Mary Ann
PULVER.
Her father was John PULVER and her mother was Mary Ann SPENCER.
John's father was Benjamin VAN LEUVEN who had married Elizabeth
KNICKERBOCKER. Benjamin was born or christened on 15 Feb 1747 in
Germantown, New York. Mary Ann PULVER crossed the plains with her
son and died on 7 Apr 1861. She is buried in San Bernardino, CA.)
Her family is descended from the BOGARTS and KNICKERBOCKERS who
were "gentry" that settled in New York in the 1600s. Marriage
A record states that Mary Lois and John Price were married in North Ogden
Utah. She was blessed before the death of Joseph Smith by him and she
John were "sealed" in the Endowment house by President Brigham Young
on 8 Feb 1855.

brother, John. Their names are on a monument under the name of
WRISTON. Isaac was killed in Brigham City, Utah, the result of a blow
to
head by a man who was angry at Isaac and another boy for having their
dogs fight ("harmlessly"). The stranger hit Isaac in the head
with a stick.
Isaac was known as "Nute". He is buried near the
Fort out there.
